Hi girls! This time of year is awesome for tons of reasons: great weather, pool parties and, for tennis fans, Wimbledon! Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and considered by many to be the most prestigious. It takes place every year around this time and determines who the best tennis players around the world are. I’m sure several of you have heard of Venus and Serena Williams, two famous sisters who have both won Wimbledon and other famous tennis tournaments. What you might not have known, though, is that joining them this year in the fourth round was Melanie Oudin from Georgia, who is only 17! Even though she is ranked 124th (which is still very good when you realize she is ranked 124th out of the world!) she beat former World Number 1 on Saturday, an awesome victory that was a shock to many!
Melanie’s secret to staying calm during the important match was to think of it as any other game in which she was playing any other opponent—not the world famous Wimbledon against the Number 1 player in the world! Melanie’s story really made me think about perseverance. Last year, she entered the Junior Event at Wimbledon and was thought to become Number 1, but instead didn’t even make it out of the second round. But clearly that didn’t stop her, and now this year she’s on fire! If you fail the first time, it’s important not to give up on your dreams, even if you can’t try again until the next year, like Melanie. Believing in yourself and practicing is the only way to make it to Number 1. Wimbledon isn’t over yet, and I’m excited to see just how far Melanie Oudin will go!
