So where exactly does a woman in the late 1800’s in Europe find herself? Well, GirlMogul Poppy is here to tell you! Maybe most women would find themselves taking care of the home, but Marie Curie found herself very far form that indeed. She found herself mixing things in a different kind of kitchen- a laboratory!

Marie Skłodowska was born in November of 1867 in Warsaw, which was part of the Russian Empire. Now, it is in Poland. Marie had 4 siblings, and her grandfather was apparently a very well-respected professor. When she was 24, Marie went with one of her sisters to Paris to further her studies. She worked as a governess and then went onto Sorbonne in Paris to get her degree in physics. She kept studying and a year later, in 1894, Marie also obtained her degree in mathematics. Interestingly enough, she then met Pierre Curie and their ideas about “magnetism” had attracted these two scientists together. At the time, according to written biographies of Marie curie, she was studying magnetic properties of steel. Pretty cool, huh?

Together, this dynamic duo created something called the electrometer, and it’s used to measure electrical currents. She found a kind of uranium using this instrument, and several new radioactive elemental properties. Marie and Pierre Curie were at the forefront of radioactivity. Marie Curie claimed that the element thorium was in fact radioactive, and together, the couple completely discovered two new radioactive elements which were later called polonium and radium.
