DATELINE: GIRLMOGUL PROJECT HEADQUARTERS

Abby Summers looked at her mentor.  Dr. Smith sat behind her desk, legs crossed at the ankles, looking one last time at the file folder marked TOP Secret in front of her.  She closed the folder, took her reading classes and pinched her temple as if to ease a strain.  Abby waited, shifting slightly from one foot to another.  Dr. Smith didn’t like fidgeting.

“Well, are we all ready for tomorrow?” Dr. Smith finally asked, her blue eyes piercing into Abby’s.  It didn’t make Abby nervous anymore, though there had been a time when she had been totally in awe of the other woman, too scared to barely manage a yes ma’m.  But time changed things.  So Abby strolled over and piled herself into one of the chairs in front of Dr. Smith’s desk.  Her long legs, tanned from her most recent hiking trip in the mesa desert, dangled over the arm of the chair.

“We’re ready.  The girls have been selected.  The meeting is tomorrow. I will make sure they’re paired up and we can begin the experiment”

Dr. Smith nodded.  She was dressed as always in a simple suit, navy this time, with her familiar silver and ruby pin on the label. Besides the glasses, and small diamond earrings it was the only direction Abby had ever seen her wear.  Though the suit was impeccably cut, it was pretty plain.

“I am still not sure about our choices, Abby.”  Abby cut in. “I know you have your reservations.  But I will manage her.”

Dr. Smith nodded. She knew she could trust Abby.

“Very well then, it’s in your hands.  I don’t want the whole experiment to go up in smoke because of one little girl.”

Abby almost smiled.  The success of the whole thing depended on girls. Of course they weren’t so little.  But they were four very different, and hopefully, very special girls.  They didn’t know it yet, what they were in for, and there was no guarantee that they were the right ones, but after so much research and testing, Abby was sure that these girls had the best shot.

“It will be fine.  Tomorrow is the start of something great. I can’t wait for the first meeting of the Weston Jr. Civic Pride Committee.”
