How often do you go to your favorite Italian restaurant and order the same pasta dish every time? Do spaghetti and meatballs sound familiar, or what about some linguini alfredo? Well, traditional Italian restaurants offer so many dishes we don’t think to order, simply because we have not tried it before, or often don’t really understand what the dish is.
Hi Girls, It’s Poppy here. If you remember, Abby wanted us to get more adventurous with our taste buds, so she is taking us on an eating tour. Now I thought, growing up in a restaurant, I knew all about food – but I guess I don’t, because I was totally surprised by our “Taste of Italy.” So here’s what I learned:
There are some items that I absolutely love at Italian restaurants. I was very hesitant at first, but after tasting these dishes, I cannot get enough! The first dish is my favorite kind of pasta. It isn’t sold at the supermarket in a box, and it is not long thin. It is gnocchi. (It sounds like Nio-kee) Gnocchi is made of a kind of soft noodle that is also very thick. The pasta dough is usually stuffed with a potato filling and cut into very small bite-size pieces. Basically, gnocchi is like a mini potato dumpling. They are great served as an entrée or appetizer, and are very filling. The best gnocchi dish I have ever had was Gnocchi with walnuts and baked pears. The combination was so delicious! Give these little pasta bites a try the next time you go out for some Italian food.
And here’s another favorite. At first I was stayed away from cause it’s squid, but it is delicious! Calamari is an Italian seafood dish that’s often served as an appetizer. t is made of squid. The squid is cut into slices, battered, and fried. The pieces of calamari often look like onion rings. The dish is usually served with a dipping sauce. The sauce is tomato based, like a marinara, but made with spicier ingredients, much like a cocktail sauce for shrimp cocktail. I thought that the idea of eating squid was totally gross at first, but it actually tastes really good. Give it a try! You might end up loving it like I did…
