The Amber Spyglass – the end of the line for Will and Lyra

So, after a few days of obsessively reading this, I am finally finished with the series. What am I talking about? Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series, of course! I wrote two posts previously about the first and second installment of series in my book review category. They were both really exciting books, all about adventure and action and intrigue, Pullman does a great job of keeping you interested. He moves the setting of the series of Lyra’s world in the first book to our world in the second, which keeps things interesting. Also, he includes the introduction of new characters and more importantly new history of the known characters in the second novel.

But, the third book is his best to date. I’ve read a lot of books, but Pullman’s The Amber Spyglass easily makes its way into my top 3 of all time. It is an ingenious combination of moral/ethical questioning and his perfected sense of suspense. At the end of every chapter, I intended to stop and actually sleep, but simply could not. I wanted to read more. Finally, the culmination of everything that has happened in the series is here, and it is everything you’d want it to be. The author closes the series on a poignant note, wrapping up all the loose ends, but leaving you with questions about your own life, and your own beliefs. Will and Lyra finally meet their destinies, and uncover the truth about Dust. I could talk all day about the relatable themes and concepts in the books, but I don’t want to give anything away. If you’ve read this awesome series, let me know! We can start our own thread with the spoilers in it!
