Fat Cat Book Club Part 5

fatcat bookBook Club Book: Fat Cat Part 5

Hey girls! I hope you enjoyed reading Fat Cat by author Robin brande as much as I did. Since I like this tween book so much, I came up with a few discussion questions you can ponder over yourself, or chat about with your friends! Book clubs are a great way to great minds working together and having fun, so be sure to try it out. Here are some things to consider after reading the book:

  1. If you could change the ending of the novel, what would you change it to? Consider the outcome of the Science Fair, and Cat’s relationship with Matt. Would you have had her lost the competition but win over Matt? Did you feel content when you turned the last page?
  2. If you had to pick a random science picture and create an experiment, what topic would be your preference? Even though biology was Cat’s thing, she got something unrelated. If you got a picture of the Hubble telescope in space, what science experiment would you create?
  3. Cat struggles with her weight and body image from the beginning of the novel. She tries diets and they don’t work. The one that does work was not an intended diet, but a life style change she had to take part in. Have you ever felt this way? Have you tried eating differently and having nothing changed? After reading about Cat, would you consider maybe changing aspects of your life instead dwelling on a number on the scale? What are some things you could do to be healthier?

Fat Cat Book Club: Part 4

Finally we have some answers people! With the last part of the book completed, we can talk openly, spoilers included, about what just went down in Cat’s life. And let’s just Chapter 62, where we last left off. I’m very happy that cat ended things off with nick. Yes, she did follow her desires for a while because it was something new she had not experienced before. But, she was smart about it in the end. She knew that in order to proceed physically with a boy, she had to be in a relationship with him. It really doesn’t make sense to just have that physical relationship, because Nick didn’t care about Cat when she was overweight, so he really didn’t care about her as a person. She even points that he really knew nothing about her.

Let’s move on to the science project.  It seems like in the end, Cat’s experiment really did come together. Her Phase II about the guys may not have ended up as she though, but Jordan’s idea of humans reacting to negative and positive stimuli did lead her to applicable conclusions. She had it together; she even started swimming again, which built up muscle and confidence for Cat. I was happy for her; even though in the end, she didn’t win first. At that point, though, it didn’t even matter! I’m glad that the author recognized that Cat became a new person with new goals, and winning wasn’t necessary anymore. She accomplished so much for herself that just doing those things was winning.

Okay, okay, I know you are just bursting to discuss Mr. Matt McKinney. So, let’s get to it! I was let down just a little bit when I found out what Matt had said. I know it was really hurtful to Cat, but at the same time, he was talking to a bully from the 7th grade. I can understand how he was being stupid and pressured by an intimidating peer. I feel like 4 years may have been a little too long and a little too harsh to ignore Matt on Cat’s part. Nevertheless, the ending was just perfect! I love the fact that they ended up together, Best of all, they did in a realistic way. There wasn’t just one meeting where everyone apologized. Instead, they went through a lot of arguing, just like people in real life would do. Overall, I was really satisfied with the ending. Check out my last post to see discussion questions you talk about with your friends, and make sure you let me know what you though of the book!

Fat Cat Book Club Part 3

fatcat bookOkay, girls, can I just say “Whoa!” I was definitely NOT expecting Cat’s love life to take off the way it did. Just to make sure I’m not spoiling any plot points for you, make sure that you’ve about ¾ of this novel, up to Chapter 61 (that’s page 231). Now that we’re on the same page, no pun intended, let’s talk about some good stuff. Greg, then Nick? What is Cat thinking? I imagine she must be feeling so many emotions. For the first time, she is actually going on just hormonal emotional instead of her usual rational logic. That must be crazy for her!

I’m glad that Cat dumped Greg, though. You could totally tell that he was not as intelligent, and couldn’t keep up with Cat’s fast-paced brains. She’s smart and witty, and he was just not with it. Nick, on the other hand, is super smart. But, he’s such a flirt. From the rumors and stories, we know he gets around with a ton of girls over the summer, even if he may not during the school year. He doesn’t seem like the guy Cat should ideally be with, because he is only interested in her physically. I really hope she makes the right moves with him, and by that I mean no moves.

I’m really glad that Cat is cooking again. I would love to be Amanda! I mean, getting gourmet food and a best friend? What more could a girl ask for? Plus, that food, despite being super healthy, also sounds upper delicious. I’m actually considering looking up some of those recipes and trying them. If you do, please comment and let me know how they turn out!

Anyway, I’m really curious how this so-called Phase II of Cat’s experiment will turn out. My questions from this part of the novel are:

What effect will Phase II have on Cat’s experiment? Will her lifestyle changes and changes in appearance really make that big of a difference on the dynamics of her relationships?

Will Cat FINALLY see herself in the mirror, with Amanda’s help?

What will happen between Matt and Cat? Will ever find out what happened between them, because Matt doesn’t seem to know either!

Book Club Book: Fat Cat Part 2

Here we are, halfway through the book, with no answers on the Cat and Matt story! Seriously, what is going on? I am DYING to know what happened between this dynamic duo. Clearly, Cat and her current BFF Amanda overheard Matt saying something seriously offensive at the 7th grade science fair- but what did he say? And to whom did he say it?

On top of that, Cat’s experiment is totally wild! I can’t believe she is going through with it. Her mom and dietician were right about the withdrawal symptoms. I was really surprised about bad she reacted initially to the immediate stopping of eating those junk foods we all love. That means that chemicals like caffeine and artificial sweeteners really do affect our bodies in a big way. It really makes me think twice about all the garbage I put in my mouth. Now, I’m not saying I m going to try Cat’s crazy lifestyle for 7 months, but the fact that she is starting to see changes is inspiring. I know Cat had to come up with those provisions to live an ancient way in a modern world, and that made me realize some of those goals are attainable in the world we live in.

Now, enough talk about her experiment; let’s talk about her love life! We can finally see Cat changing her outside, but she is clearly not changing her inside. Despite several attempts from Amanda her boyfriend, Cat will not even persuaded to come on a double date with her best friends, nor will she even engage in conversation with Jordan’s teammate Greg. I’m not sure where this is going, especially considering we know how obsessed Cat is with Matt and how he mistreated her. Here are my burning questions for the 2nd half of the book:

Still, what DID Matt say on that fateful day at the 7th grade science project?

Will Cat ever realize how beautiful she really is, and that her outside is now reflecting her inside?

Will Cat give any boy a chance to develop a relationship with her, whether it is Matt or not?

Will Mr. Fizer pull the plug on Cat’s experiment?
