Hi Girls, it’s Daisy, your reluctant fashionista. So, I was surfing the web the other day when I came across this pretty strange fashion article. Now, normally, I wouldn’t be so intrigued by a fashion article, unless it was more of the do-it-yourself kind. But this one was different: it was written by an older man and was all about why denim is bad. It was even titled, “Demon Denim!”
Personally, I love denim! To me, there’s nothing more comfortable than a well-worn pair of jeans. But the author of this article apparently thought differently. He said that if Grace Kelly would not have worn certain clothing, then girls shouldn’t wear it either. Just in case you don’t know who Grace Kelly is, here’s a heads-up: she was an Academy-Award winning actress and style icon. If you’ve ever heard the song, “Grace Kelly” by MIKA, it’s about her! She was known for wearing very fancy, fashionable outfits—big dresses and frilly skirts. Don’t get me wrong, I love Grace Kelly, but it seems totally unrealistic to do every day things wearing a ball gown. I cannot imagine building a computer or playing video games looking like that! Every girl deserves the chance to dress up sometimes, but to say that girls should always look like Grace Kelly seems a bit weird to me. I think a girl’s style should reflect who she is and what she likes. I don’t want anyone to tell me I have to look like a glamorous movie star every day of my life. I wonder if the man who wrote that article ever tried writing computer programs while wearing high heels and an evening dress!
Hey Girls! It’s Rose here, with this week’s White House Round Up! Here’s something I found out that I thought was a little surprising: since the Obama family has moved into the White House, Sasha and Malia get to spend more time with their dad, not less! Now they get to see him in the mornings, and every night for dinner, and can even walk in to see him in his office when he’s working (but not too often—he’s a busy man!) According to the First Lady, this is more normal than the family has been in a long time. It’s great to know that the Obama family finally feels like they’re more of a family again and can spend more time together!
Sasha and Malia continued to bond with their family over Memorial Day weekend, when they went to Camp David to relax. Camp David is the official vacation spot for every First Family of the United States and is located in Maryland. It’s an awesome place for the girls to hang out since it has cabins, tennis courts, a swimming pool, putting greens, and lots of trails to hike on. It sounds like a really fun place to spend the weekend! President Obama and the First Lady have also said that they plan to go back to Camp David a lot over the summer so the Obama girls can enjoy a nice summer vacation. I wonder what else the Obama girls plan to do during their summer vacation? As soon as we find out, we’ll let you know!
Hey Girls! While you might have been having barbecues or some other kind of fun this weekend, the crew of Atlantis got to enjoy their weekend in a different way…by coming home to Earth!
Atlantis is a NASA space shuttle that was most recently used to service The Hubble, one of the largest space telescopes, which was carried into orbit in April of 1990, 19 years ago! What makes the Hubble telescope different from other space telescopes is that it can be fixed (or serviced) in space by astronauts so that it can function longer. This wasn’t the first time the Hubble has been serviced either. This recent voyage was Servicing Mission 4, an intense thirteen day mission, that might be the last. The crew took off on Atlantis on May 11th and returned on Sunday, May 24th. The work the crew of Atlantis accomplished made the Hubble telescope better than ever and will extend its lifespan by at least five years.
The Hubble telescope has helped scientists and astronomers to make many important discoveries and, after this mission, it can continue to give the world new tools to learn more about the Universe and how it started.
Atlantis also has a unique first in history: it was home to the first ever Twitter update from space! (If you don’t already know, Twitter is a social-networking site where users can post updates about their lives.) Michael Massimino, the first person to use Twitter in space, sent this message, “From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!” If you want to read all of Michael Massimino’s Twitter updates during Servicing Mission 4, you can read them on http://twitter.com/Astro_Mike. What an incredible adventure to be on!
