Why is summer a great time to focus on family nutrition?  Because it’s much easier to eat healthier in the summer than it is in the winter.  Add in all the outdoor time you’re getting and summertime is a great season install a family nutrition program.  Use these tips to get started

  1. Family Mealtime – Eat together as a family as often a possible.  Research shows that families that eat together have a healthier diet overall than those that don’t.  To make mealtime more fun, get everyone involved in the planning and preparation of meals.
  2. Eat Outside – the summertime weather is a great time to get outside. Turn off the TV and leave the phone inside.  Gather everyone around the outdoor table and enjoy the great outdoors while you eat.
  3. Use the Grill – Grilling is a great way to serve low-fat, healthy proteins in your diet. Marinate meat in low-fat marinades and use just a little oil to cook it in.

These are just a few ways you can start a healthy summer family nutrition program.

summer months to bring the family back together. Sure, the family may be busy but there has been much research done about the benefits of eating together as a family. One of the things researchers found indicates families who eat their meals together generally have a healthier diet than those who do not.

Make a meal plan and stick to it. Get your whole family involved in choosing which meals you’ll eat during the week. Include them in every step of the process – planning, shopping, preparing and serving – so everyone has a say in what the family eats.

Another way to improve your diet during the summer is to turn off everything which could be a distraction during meal time. Turn off the television and let the answering machine catch any calls while you eat. The fewer distractions you have, the less you’re likely to eat and the easier it will be to recognize when you’re full.

Rather than drinking soft drinks, which have been proven not to be a healthy choice, drink plenty of ice water, iced tea and 100% fruit juices. Does this mean you can’t ever have another soft drink? Of course not; however, cutting back on them can help you lose weight, give you more energy and help you remain properly hydrated.

Fill your refrigerator with seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables. Take the extra time to pre-prepare a large salad which you can enjoy for several meals. Cut up celery sticks, carrot sticks and other vegetables to have with healthy dips. You may also want to cut up a refreshing fruit salad which includes your family’s favorite fruits.

Start the grill. As long as the foods you cook on a grill aren’t burnt or look like charcoal, grilling lean meats is a great way to cook during the summer. Any fat in the meat will drop off the meat and that means it won’t go on your hips.

Prepare some of your foods in a crock pot. It will allow you to make a wonderful, healthful meal for your family without heating up your home. Just add the ingredients in the morning, set the temperature and leave it alone. When you return home at the end of the day the meal will be mostly prepared. Toss a quick salad and your family will be able to eat in no time.

These are a few of the top summer nutrition tips for the whole family. There are other things you can do, as well, but you can start with these. You could see results in the way you feel and the way you look before summer is over.

Celebrate Earth Day – Plant a Garden

michelle-obama-gardenHey Girl Moguls! It’s Poppy here, and with Earth Day coming up this month, I just wanted to share something cool with you about what Michelle Obama and the Obama girls are doing to go Green! Michelle Obama started the first White House “kitchen garden” since Eleanor Roosevelt and planted a bunch of healthy vegetables in it like lettuce, spinach, broccoli, onions, carrots and peas. This garden will grow food for the entire Obama family and everyone—Michelle, Sasha, Malia and even President Obama—will all help to care for it. Starting a garden is such a great thing to do; not only does it save money on food shopping, but it can be really relaxing to work on and is a great encouragement to eat healthy!

As most of you know, I grew up on a farm so I know a lot about gardening and taking care of plants. If you’re interested in starting your own garden, you don’t always have to start big—you can find a small plot of land in your backyard to begin or, if it’s too cold outside, start growing your plants indoors in plant pots! Wherever you start growing your plants, make sure it’s in a spot with lots of sunshine. There are two different ways you can start your garden: you can either grow them from seeds or from small plants called seedlings. Figure out what kind of vegetables you want to grow and what grows well in your area. Don’t be discouraged if your vegetables don’t grow right away—it takes time! Gardening and farming both require being really patient, so relax and let your plants enjoy the sun!

P.S. Even if you don’t want to grow your own vegetable garden, you can encourage your family to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables. In addition to being fresher and tastier, buying locally grown food helps the environment since food doesn’t have to travel far and waste gas to get to you!

My deluxe skin cream breakthrough

Hello GirlMoguls! It’s Poppy here, with a breakthrough in my face cream project! I always find it interesting when science combines with a field like food or skin care to make something really cool and new. As you know, my dad helped me set up a mini-lab in the house so I could work on my projects. I tried to make a face cream using seaweed at first, but the smell was just gross. My grandmother then gave me the nectar from an agave plant, which blended well with my cream but is very hard to find. I just did not want to give up. I only tried two ingredients. There had to have been something I could find that could help me make a refreshing, nice smelling cream for me and my friends, right?
Well, even though science is my absolute favorite subject, I looked into reading about ingredients like seaweed. I was hoping to find a new ingredient to use that I could easily get without bothering my mom (she’s been busy with the restaurants). Fortunately, my dad stumbled upon an article by The New York Times that talked about regular fruits and vegetables being good for your face and body. The article talks about how ingredients like spinach and apples can be great for your skin. I was so surprised! I never knew something that I eat every day, like apples, could benefit my outside just like my insides. Here is the article my dad and I read about spinach.
Apparently, spinach has these things called antioxidants. My grandmother told me antioxidants cancel out bad effects of molecules in the environment called “free radicals” which harm the skin. That means that when antioxidants are used on skin, they help keep it healthy and full of oxygen. I hate eating my spinach, but I wouldn’t mind putting spinach extract on my face! The writer of the article says “it takes 55 pounds of spinach to create one pound of extract.” But, I don’t need a whole pound of extract. I just need a little bit to use in my skin care product.
Apples, on the other hand, have a great taste. They’re so sweet and refreshing, I like to eat one every day at lunch. I never thought to put part of the apple on my face – science can be so cool sometimes. The article talked about how apple-seed oil keeps skin really soft and bright. I’m going to try to figure out how to extract that oil so I can put in my face lotion. The last step will be to put some sparkles in the cream. I know it will be my favorite part.
I’m going to try out my new discoveries, and hopefully I will report to you soon about my brand new creams. I want them smell sweet, have good ingredients, and shine with a little sparkle. I promise I won’t give up till I find a formula! Help me name my skincare line – post your suggestions below.
