In her words:

Describe yourself: I live on a farm on the outskirts of Weston.  My parents moved out there from the city when I was little.  My mom was a teacher, but now she works on raising her sheep, making cheese and teaching us.  My dad also works on the farm, but her works for the cable company as well, doing installations and repairs.  He’s really into technical things and has a workshop out back that is filled with bits and pieces of old motors, tvs, antennas and other stuff.  And toasters.  He’s always fixing toasters for the neighbors.

I have been home schooled for as long as I can remember, but it’s not like I never see anyone, we do a lot of group things with other homeschool kids – we get together for science and math lessons a lot.  The history and English stuff I can do on my own, since I really love to read.  We also do lessons on the computer and listen to lectures from professors when we’re driving in the car – my mom doesn’t believe we should waste any moment for learning.

In the spring and summer I work on the vegetable garden.  I grow all organic vegetables and fruit and sell them at a farmstand in front of the house.  It’s a lot of work, but I get to keep most of the money, except for what I need to pay to my sister to help and anything my parents invest to help me out.  I have to save some of the money, but the rest I can use for whatever I want.  I spend a bunch on books – even though I go to the library all the time, there always seems to be a new book I can find that I want to read.  And I like having them on my bookshelves.  In fact, I like books so much that I set up a library in the attic – it’s my special place, with lots of shelves, things I collect and my desk for writing. I am even saving for my own laptop with a wireless connection so I can do all my research from there.

Please tell us who your hero is and why?: My mom and Amelia Earnhardt – she was the first woman to fly around the world.

Someone from History you admire: Eleanor Roosevelt

If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be: Sasha and Malia Obama. Or Eleanor Roosevelt.

Your favorite place: The Weston Municipal Library

A place you would like to visit: Italy. I want to see all the old statues and history and walk around those old buildings. And England – I want to see a castle up close.

What do you want to be when you grow up: A writer. I think I want to live in the city for awhile.  Farm life is ok, but I think I am ready for something more exciting. Maybe I could spend some of the time in the city and some in the country?

Why do you want to help out with Weston’s Jr Civic Pride Committee?

I want to help Weston celebrate its past. I also like history and the story of Weston’s founder.  I would like the opportunity to work with other kids on a project and of course it would be way cool to win the summer camp scholarship – I would really like to do the creative arts program.

Dr. Smith’s Comments:

Rose seems like a good fit for the program.  She appears to have a wide base of knowledge and love learning. Even though she sounds like a bookworm, it seems like she knows how to apply her knowledge – her work on her farmstand sounds like a good background for The GirlMogul Project.

Abby’ Comments: I agree – Rose seems super cool and a self starter. Can’t wait to challenge her to a trivia contest.

GirlMogul Sneak Peak at Harry Potter

An Insider Look: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios!

HarryPotterCastleHey, GirlMoguls! So, when I read the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, I definitely thought to myself, “I wonder what that looks like!” and “I really wish I could see the Great Hall!” Well, dreams do come true.

When you read the fantasy series, did you think of things like this? Didn’t you want to experience the awesome world Rowling created? Warner Bros. and Universal Studios are teaming up to bring the world of harry Potter to life. Author J.K. Rowling has been involved in the project, as has the cast of the movie!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is debuting this spring, and will involve life-size attractions inspired by the books and movies. The theme park will be an addition to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. It s being built right now in the Island of Adventures side, and will have shopping, rides, and of course, the Hogwarts Castle.harryPottermainsign

Some of my favorite features of the park include the installment of an entire Hogsmeade, complete with all the stores I’ve always wanted to go. There will be a Honeydukes with fabulous treats like chocolate frogs, a Three Broomsticks serving butterbeer, and even a Zonko’s where you can get crazy magical toys. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will also include Dragon Challenge, a set of two twin high-speed roller coasters, Flight of the Hippogriff, a family coaster, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, a cool, new attraction featuring brand new technology.

HarryPotterSignI recently made my way to Orlando, Florida, and got a sneak peek at the construction going on in the Islands of Adventure. Check out my pics and keep checking for updates!

Quote of the Day – Courage to Friends – J.K. Rowling Quote

“It takes a great deal of courage to stand up to your enemies, but even more to stand up to your friends”
- J. K. Rowling

Joanne Murray, also known as J. K. Rowling by pen, is the author and creator of the revolutionary Harry Potter fantasy series. The Harry Potter series is a worldwide phenomenon which ranges from books, to films, to merchandise and much more. J.K. Rowling demonstrates the true meaning of friendship in her Harry Potter series between the main characters. We read these books and fun and adventurous stories, but deep down, Rowling gives us important life lessons that can really help us make our lives better.

One of the primary themes throughout the books is the true value of friendship amongst these characters. Many aspects of friendship are tested in the story, from loyalty to jealousy, and from love to courage. The characters are faced with difficult challenges with their friends but at the end of the day they have all learned how difficult but rewarding it can be to stand up to your friends for what you believe is right. In this quotation, Rowling points out a very important aspect we face in friendship.

A lot of times you may face an issue with your friends. What do you do? Sometimes, I feel like bottling up my feelings inside and not say anything to my friend, because I don’t want to start an argument. But, as I learned from this quotation, this can ultimately end up hurting your friendship with that person. A true friend will always understand and respect your feelings. It takes a lot of courage to tell your friend how you feel or to stand up to them, especially when you know it may hurt them or upset them. As Rowling says, it is easier to stand up to your enemies because their opinion doesn’t matter as much as your friends’ opinions. However, you should always respect a friendship and be honest with your friends and loved ones. So next time you feel sad or upset with a friend, find the courage to tell that person how you feel and you will see it has its rewards.

The Lady Behind the Magic: J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling Creator of Harry Potter
J.K. Rowling Creator of Harry Potter
Joanne Rowling was born on July, 31, 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England. But she is known to the world and millions of her fans as J. K. Rowling, the British author and creator of the sensational Harry Potter series. She has sold over 400 million copies of books, and if that wasn’t enough, the books were made into live action films which broke numerous records. They even became one of the highest grossing film series of all time! Harry Potter is recognized all over the world and has become a never-ending fad that everyone from kids, teenagers and adults just can’t seem to get enough of. She has become a pioneer of our times and these books have gained her countless awards and achievements.
Growing up, Rowling had to struggle to get to where she is today, and so I think her story is truly inspiring. She went from living on welfare to becoming a billionaire in a span of few years! That is really a GirlMogul hard at work! It happened all thanks to her extraordinary creation of the world of Harry Potter. She used her experiences growing up and the people around her in her life as inspiration for characters in the story. She also used her own struggles in life to draw certain aspects of her fictional world of Harry Potter. Asides from being a philanthropist and giving back to multiple charities, she is one of the richest, most powerful and influential woman of our generation. She has inspired millions of readers to pick up a book and read. I remember seeing a kid in my class reading the books and thinking, “What is that?” But now, I can re read those books over and over again! The series is really why I love reading now, because before I really didn’t like it so much. I can’t wait for any other books she comes out with!
Want to hear a cool fact about J.K. Rowling? Apparently, the character of Hermione was inspired by Rowling herself! What character do you think is most like you?
