“Friends and good manners will carry you where money won’t go.”
– Margaret Walker
Selected by GirlMogul Lily
I like this quote – actually Dr. Smith mentioned it to me. I later found out the Margaret Walker was an important African American poet, writer and intellectual – pretty cool. What I liked most about this quote was the simplicity – like, yeah of course – good manners will get you far in life – my mom also says that and I guess she’s right. Ever notice how a smile or a simple please of thank you will make people smile back and start to chat with you? I have. So while of course it’s not bad to have money, it seems like you can get pretty far in life by just being nice to people.
Here’s a picture of Margaret Walker:

“Just as you would not neglect the seeds that you planted with the hope that you will bear vegetables, fruits and flowers, so you must attend to and nourish the garden of your becoming…” Jean Houston
Dr. Jean Houston, scholar, philosopher and researcher in human capacities, is one of the foremost visionary thinkers and doers of our time, one of the principal founders of the Human Potential Movement. A powerful and dynamic speaker, she holds conferences and seminars with social leaders, educational institutions and business organizations worldwide.
“Be adventurous. Try a lot of different things. Who cares if it doesn’t work out? It’s only paper!” Mary Engelbreit
A bit of encouragement for all those frustrated artists and writers out there – get out there and draw, write and think – it’s only paper and no one has to see it or read it – though you may desparately hope they do someday. But for today, just pick up the pen and the paper and go for it. I draw all the time — and I am terrible at it. But sometimes, it’s not half bad (meaning it’s recognizable) and a feel a small little burst of pride – I did it, by myself, without having to wait on anyone else – how great is that. So this summer, promise yourself you’ll be more creative – and see where it leads you.
