Earth Day Garbage-less Lunch Challenge

Hi everyone – tomorrow is Earth Day – are you ready for it? Well, I wanted to share with you some great facts about the day, how it got started and what you can do about it.

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd every year in the United States and other countries in the western hemisphere (many other countries celebrate it on the Spring equinox in March), and is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth and its Environment. It was founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson, from Washington state, who wanted to create a day dedicated to teach people how to be more environmentally friendly. At that time, everyone was concerned about population growth and its effect on the environment. Since 1970, Earth Day has grown into a national event, with campus rallies, sit-ins and tons of teaching efforts. Concern has shifter from population growth to the effects of global warming and a bigger effort to be more green – recycle more, create less garbage and generally leave a smaller “footprint” on the earth.

To learn more about Earth Day and what you can do to be more environmentally friendly, check out Earth Day net. It has tons of information on events that are happening for the day and tips, challenges and quizzes.

Fun Challenge – the Garbage-less lunch. We tried this at school last year and are going to try it again. Have you thought about how much garbage your simple lunch produces – from juice boxes to little plastic baggies, even if you bring your lunch in a lunch tote, you’re still producing a lot of waste? So today, after you eat your lunch look at what’s left – from plastic forks, to paper napkins, to juice boxes. WOW – you’ll be amazed – and some of that stuff won’t be recycled or will take eons to break down. Now, your challenge for Wednesday, Earth Day is to bring a completely garbage-less lunch. That’s right. Ditch the plastic baggies for reusable containers, bring in real silverware (don’t throw it out!), cloth napkins and a re-usable water bottle. See if you can get your lunch group in on it too! Have fun and good luck!
